Prop Making - DTK guns

Here’s an impromptu “commission” for a close friend of mine. He had been planning to do a cosplay for an upcoming anime convention but was running short on time so I offered to help finish off some of the props for his costume.

The character is Soul Eater’s “Death the Kid”, which has a set of special guns and a number of metal and bone ornaments on his costume. The original plan was to make most of them out of simple paint, paper and foil constructs but we decided to push the envelope and do a “live action” treatment of the character. We bought some toy guns to mod and came up with more realistic designs of the ornaments for me to sculpt.

At the moment, the guns and skull broach have been completed. For the guns, I carved in the “teeth” notches, added the skull emblems on the handle and applied a better metallic finish to simulate real metal. I also replaced the blue leds with pink and white ones to better match the effects seen in the anime (Ahh, it's refreshing to do more electronics work again ^^).

As for the skull broach, I sculpted it out of super sculpey, wet sanded to a glass-like smoothness and used the same metallic treatment I did on the guns. Overall it was a fun process. I was very impressed with the quality of the metallic finish, especially when compared to what the toy guns looked like before.

Anyway enjoy. The white bone accents on the suit will be coming shortly.
