Upgrades - TG Group and Birthday!

Wed Dec 16, 2009, 3:56 AM

Ahh upgrades. I've been getting quite a bit of them lately. Moved from Vista to Windows 7, which is performing quite nicely compared to its predecessor, renovated my room with a shelf and lighting system to house the library of books I've collected over the years, finally started appreciating loose leaf tea thanks to a serendipitous encounter in China Town, and now as of this day, I have turned 22 years old.

Yep, today is my birthday, and as unremarkable as it is to become 22 as opposed to 18 or 21, it seems to have a similar feel of signifance. It is the first birthday where I have no school to worry about. You see, I have the unfortunate circumstance where December the 16th often lands squarely on an exam date. If I'm lucky enough to dodge that, the whole week of the 16th is still usually busy with exams or final assignments before we go on winter break.

For the first time, I can enjoy this day without any regrets or worries, and that feels quite liberating. Of course, that's not to say that I'm planning to have a big party or anything. Quite the opposite. I hope for a quiet day with my family, a nice dinner and perhaps a movie afterward.

I expect no big gifts or surprises, because there is already something else that has made this day significant. I just received a large envelope sent via express mail. Inside it was a glossy black folder with the words "Every Journey Has a First Step...", and inside that was a letter addressed to me with an offer I had been waiting for since I graduated.

Yep, for my 22nd birthday, I received the 'gift' of favorable employment. XD My first industry-level job begins next Monday! I'm not quite ready to reveal who this employer is, but I can say that it's an unexpected dream come true to be able to work for them. =]

Speaking of upgrades, I should also mention that the Technoguild satellite here has just been turned into a full fledged DA Group!! For those of you interested in joining, go check it out. We're hoping to update it soon. Also all current members, do us a favor and join up, yeah? Many thanks in advance! =] *bows*

How to Host Paintchat

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 2, 2009, 5:07 AM

Paint + Chat = Epic

So as some of you know, I seem to have attracted a rather large amount of questions regarding the ability to host PaintChat because of my reply on this journal: [link]

Even though I posted that 3 years ago, I still have people contacting me for help to get their own paintchat server working. XD I definitely consider it as a pleasure to help anyone that approaches me, but I find it rather inefficient to say the same things over and over again, so I have gone a step ahead and created a thorough tutorial for you all to refer to. Hopefully it will answer most of the questions I did not get a chance to cover in my original 'tutorial'.

As always though, feel free to contact me personally if you need further assistance! =]

If you want to see a real Paintchat server up and running, check out TG's Paintchat server hosted here: [link]

Also I should mention that this tutorial will be one of many I will be posting up. One for OpenCanvas, Zbrush, concept design and a bunch more will be on the Technoguild network soon. We're currently trying to get things rolling again so come visit and stay tuned!

Oh and yes, more art coming soon! I'm working on my personal website and I hope to release it with much sketches and concepts I have not posted here. So yeah, big stuff coming up!

RoboGames!

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 14, 2009, 8:01 PM

Following the Robot trail

I went to this event last weekend with a couple of my classmates from my robotics course.

The event is a 3 day long expo held in San Francisco, of all things Robotics related, ranging from simple robot related artwork to full on artificial intelligence demos. The biggest event by far is the 'BattleBots' competition where teams build combat robots to duel in a large metal arena shielded in an iron and bulletproof glass cage. It's quite a spectacle to see. ^^

My classmates are talking about submitting our UAV to the navigation competition next year. It seems that there isn't much aerial vehicles yet. We're also going to try to persuade the Mech-e and Electrical engineering department back at our campus to start competing. I'm sure they'll blow them all out of the water if they did! XD

Here's some highlights of the stuff we saw:

The Beer Keg flamethrower robot was a great crowd-pleaser. XD Has anyone competed in something like this? I'd be interested to hear what it's like to be part of the action. =]

Graduated!

Journal Entry: Sun May 24, 2009, 7:45 PM

Back!

Hey guys, I'm back!

The last month has been extremely hectic. I finished two thesis-level projects, pwned a final (surprising as it's usually the other way around), and yesterday, I graduated!!

I now have a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with a focus on Robotics and Mechatronics, and an unofficial second focus on Computer Graphics and Animation from the University of California, Berkeley. The -dare I say-, top public university in the nation! =D

Of course, much celebrating was done after, in between and sometimes before all these things happened. XD I am very happy, relived and grateful for the entire experience.

Anyway, I am back, and I have much to upload and catch up on. See you around! =]

A Thank You...

It’s easy to say that these past four years were a blur. However when you think about it, everything seems to pass quickly when you look back. In these four years, I have experienced both the blissful flight, and the stifling lingering of time. There were moments where I thought it would never end, and others where I hoped that it never would...

I’ve experienced great joy and great despair, great enlightenment and great confusion… and in that experience, I can say that I have lived a lifetime here in College. Regardless of how I see these four years, there is absolutely no way I could have survived without the kindness and support of those around me; to my professors, mentors and advisors, to my classmates and friends, to my benefactors, to my family, both by blood and by extension.

It is because of you that I now venture forth into the world, confident and prepared for whatever time and fate may throw at me.

Thank You from the bottom of my heart.

** A special thanks to you guys online in TG, DA, and the general art related scene. You guys are one of the main reasons why I was able to survive all the intense work, stress and difficulty. You kept me sane, you allowed me to rest my brain from all the mind numbing technical work, to unwind and to indulge in the more creative side of my mind. You have inspired me, encouraged me, kept my dreams and aspirations strong.. and because of that I am very grateful to you all. *bows respectfully*

Cutting Comm for next month

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 29, 2009, 1:48 PM

Updatage

Hey guys,

Probably already obvious but I've been extremely busy with class assignments and projects lately. At this point I only have two weeks before it's all over. Two thesis-level research projects are due the week of May 13 and I will have a final exam on the 7th.

As per tradition, I will be cutting comm, or at least drastically decreasing my online operations until all of this is over. This probably means that a number of functions around the TG site I manage may be inactive, but I will talk to the other staff to see if they may take over for me while I'm out.

For those of you who are going through similar experiences, I would strongly recommend that you take a break from the online scene to focus on final exams and assignments.I can't speak for the rest of the sites you frequent, but I can guarantee you that TG will still be here and ready to roll again when you get back! =]

Anyway, best of luck to all of you and I look forward to dedicating more time toward more art once I return!

Stay awesome, guys! *bow*
