TechnoGuild Gears - Interlock

Alright, let the updates roll in. =]

If you've been following me up to this point, you'll have known that most of my art involves experimentation. My time tends to be pretty limited when school is in session so I make it a point to use the art I make as a means of learning a new skill. At least then I feel that it was a decent use of my time.

Last I left you, I was looking heavily into the aspects of 3d modeling and rendering. This particular series of images helped me refine my skill in polygonal modeling, grouping and procedurally generating objects (that is, using code to create and place geometry).

What you see there is the TechnoGuild insignia using polygonal and NURBS modeling techniques. The object was then referenced and procedurally generated to interlock with each other like a series of gears would.

The chrome shader on the object was also tweaked to accommodate surface normals, and the entire scene was lit using HDRI lighting alone (also known as environment mapped lighting).

Modeling and generating done in Maya with MEL/Python scripting
Shading and post processing done in 3ds Max
