Description

Here's a new piece of 3d work I recently did as a means of practicing client concept relations. Basically I wanted to simulate the industry practice of turning a pre-existing piece of concept art into a full textured and posed model for visualization. This kind of workflow occurs very often in the game and movie industries where artists in an art department would create 2d concept drawings, get them signed off by the director, and then pass them off to the modelers and riggers (often called modeling or creature technical directors, or 'TDs') to be made into a 3d model to be put into a feature production.

My artist in this particular endeavor is my friend :icondigitalenvoy: who produced this set of concept sketches for me to work off of:

The process took about 2 weeks where I built, sculpted, textured, colored and posed the character in Zbrush. I made use of the new version's 'Zsketch' utility which allows one to build a model by adding volume and form to a basic skeletal shape, much like how traditional armature and clay figures are made. Once I had textures, and color in, I posed the character and exported the geometry into maya where it was assigned shaders, lit and then finally rendered.

The most tedious part about the whole process was managing the many separate files and revisions I produced, each of which -because of their size- had the ability to bring my computer's memory and processing power to its knees if I loaded them and pressed buttons in the wrong way. My desktop is a quad core, 6 gigabyte ram machine, and yet it was no match to Dyle who, by the end of the process had a main file that tipped the scales at 1.54 gigabytes...

Still, the process ended up being quite fulfilling. Not only did I learn a lot, I also finished it just in time to present at a recent interview.

Anyway, a big thanks to ~DigitalEnvoy for the collaboration. I hope this experience can help you as much as it has for me. *bows* =] I will post more details on this project soon. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Two weeks of work and youve posted up what some people in the industry strive their whole career to accomplish. This goes to show you that if you put your mind and determination in a direction and never give up, there isnt a limit to what you can do. From each milestone you reach you appear to ignore the standard improving over a gradual period of time, and have adapted to an achievement pace that increases exponentially. Your work is an inspiration of what we should attest to a lifestyle of greatness, achieving one thing right after another, never stopping from learning new techniques. This submission is yet another example of how your work leaves people like me in total awe.
From a few models youve shown in Second Life one would not have expected you to jump headfirst into fully detailed 3-D work this quickly. Where I would expect less time to be spent crafting; No, even the parts that would be covered in clothes later are finely crafted to each individual scale. The clothing is a whole series of eye candy unto itself. No detail was spared from the arm bandages to the clothing make the character seem even more alive.
Overall the piece is quite moving, I at least want to see who the transgressor is and what he has done to aggravate Dyle to this point. And for those in the artistic field it gives a shining example of what the Zbrush tool can accomplish when used to the fullest of its ability.
Looking forward to what next adventure lies in wait on your horizon my friend!
