Character Design - Delrin by chemb0t Character Design - Delrin by chemb0t
And now for something slightly different. This is one of my recently developed characters for my Technoguild storyline. Not much is decided on him aside from his conceptual purpose, which is to help normalize the feel of the story's background and demonstrate that:

1) not all characters in the story are anthropomorphic
2) not all central characters are young
3) not all characters need to have a 'superpower' or special ability

Such a character would help make the story more unique in those particular areas, and separate it from typical gnere expectations, I thought. =]

Story wise, Delrin is supposed to serve sortof as the wise guru and quirky/enthusiastic old man in which a lot of interesting dialogue can start. XD

I can see him holding a high position in the guild, perhaps as an arbiter who sends bewildered guild members on esoteric assignments which initially seem like wild goose chases but end up being well thought out and planned in the end. =B

"Wait, back up. Let me get this straight... You want me to travel half way across the continent, visit three foreign countries and risk getting my head blown off by border police... just to buy a pizza for you?

"Yes. =]"

"..."

I'll be sure to update you guys as I solidify his standing. For now, I'd like to hear your thoughts on his look. He is supposed to appear as what one could conceive as a mix of old and new eras. I was going sort of for a 'wizard/modern scientist polished over with a late 18 century nuance' XD I think I'm satisfied with his hair and choice of spectacles but I still have yet to decide on a proper attire.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy! =] *bows*

Haha, my Delrin character is almost the exact opposite of this.

Ah, you have a Delrin character as well, huh? =] I'm curious, where did you get the name from?

I was actually trying to put together a made-up name back in 1995. Ran through the alphabet about 5 times 'till I settled on starting with a D, rolled over to the Dell on my laptop monitor, and just started adding a million suffixes 'till I hit the R category, and finalized on Rin to a sort of throwback to Rin Tin Tin that dog. The character himself is the one in my icon.

Over a decade later, I look it up and found out that "Delrin" is the name of an aerodynamic plastic chemical and a brand name for curtain rods. <_<

Heheh, interesting. =] That type of plastic is where I got the name from for my character. The sound of it rang quite well with the nature of his look, I thought. The synthetic aspect of the product also seemed to be a nice way to lend toward his story as well.

I see. It's... kind of hit and miss. He used to be pretty fast, but now he's kinda slowed down. It's kinda like King DeDeDe on Brawl. He's generally a slow character, but if you move correctly, he's lightning.

Of course, he's legally insane now, but still...

The most recent version looks very nice ... more distinguished than quirky, and with sort of a cross between a suitcoat and mage's robes. That one doesn't seem like a "crazy" character so much as a mentor.

How that is very very VERY nice ^_^ buddy.
His head makes me wanna model it (2008) but I need a profile. I do have various tutorials of character modeling if you like.

And you gotta colour the 2008 one ^_^.

There's a small profile shot in the center. Perhaps that might work? Or do you mean a whole body profile? XD

If that's the case, I'll come up with one once I decide on the rest of his outfit along with the color. =] Ah, and I would be very interested in seeing some character modeling tutorials ^^

That profile looks more toward the 2007 with the curve in the mustache. The 2008 shows good work with its brow.

i do agee that his hair is perfect and he does have a wise old look about him (and he definately seems like the kind of person who would send me halfway across the universe for a pizza.)

i liked the curl of his mustashe his glasses and his cane from the 07 model but the clothes from the 08 are perfect!

I like him, I really like him! You and your kickass character design...

You seem to be doing something similar to what I'm doing with Drake. There are no humans in my universe, so point one is out, but I am in no way making Drake younger than mid-thirties. As for special abilities, he has flight and echolocation, but he's a bat, so it's only normal he'd have them. He's not by any means a fighter, he can hold himself up in battle a bit if he cleverly uses his gadgets, but he's fragile, doesn't pack a punch and doesn't have the speed to make up for that. In short, Drake's not going to win many fights, but that's not what he's there for. He's the brain of the team, he's there to think, not fight.

Oh, and I relly like that sugestion. Taicon gave. I can imagine him having gardening as a hobby too.

*gives Delrin a pizza*

Somehow reminds me of Dr. Light from Megaman X! The newest version is the best! I might make him a minor part in Dack's story for Burning Fur III.

Very nice design Dack :3. You will have a full team designed in no time flat at this rate. When you mentioned 180's the coal industry steam age and also Ben Franklin style garbs from england popped into mind.
Secondly I dont know why but i could totally see him having gardening as a hobby. Tending a plant one moment, then moving out of view for a moment and coming back in another set of cloths without having any possible amount of time to change, and then using said plant in another experiment.
As for Attire, were you looking for something that would make him stand out as a high official for the position he holds or have him popping in and all over the TG?

He's really cool, but personally he seems a tad cliche, but neverthe less, I like it.

heheh yes, the cliche-ness was somewhat intended. The dark glasses and bushy mustache for example are supposed to give him that generic mad scientist feel. XD
